The UCM Research Ethics and Governance (REG) Panel promotes ethical approaches to research and other related institutional activities across UCM. It also provides advice and guidance to independent researchers on the Island.
Functions and Activities
- To advise UCM bodies, staff and students, as appropriate in any matter pertaining to research ethics (this will not include legal advice);
- To assess and, as appropriate, approve, research proposals submitted by UCM students and staff and those conducting independent research such as UCM Visiting Scholars or Honorary Fellows and by agreement IOM Hospice.
- UCM REG does not replace ethics and governance approval that is provided and required within Agreements between an HEI partner of UCM, or that of the DHSC (delegated to Public Health Directorate) under s2(4) of the NHS Act 2001
- UCM REG does not receive, require, retain or store any subsequent research outputs or data from any research proposals considered.
- To liaise, as necessary, with external research ethics committees, in particular the Department of Health & Social Care IOM Research and Ethics Committee (IOMREC);
- To issue guidelines and codes of practice, where appropriate, on any matter pertaining to research ethics and governance;
- To consult and comment on particular ethical developments and policies, as requested by the UCM senior leadership team;
- To disseminate lessons-learned and common themes arising from ethical queries;
- To contribute to the effective integration of ethics into the training and continual professional development systems supported by UCM structures;
- To raise awareness of research integrity and ethics amongst staff and students across UCM and the Island.
